Biddulph has a rich heritage. Biddulph Town Council, together with matched funding from the Moorlands Partnership Board, is actively involved with the enhancement and restoration of heritage sites within our district.
The Moorlands Partnership Board considers matters related to environmental improvements including:
Promotion of environmental enhancements.
Promotion of private and commercial sponsorship of projects.
Formulation, administration and implementation of enhancement schemes; offering grant aid to secure them.
Promotion of good shop front design.
Here’s some examples of completed projects:
Repairs to the Well on Tower Hill Road, Brown Lees
Works to restore the well consisted of additional cobbles, re-instatement of missing stone to the side of the well and repairs to the top lintel.
Restoration & Re-instatement of ‘Robert Heath Style’ Railings on Congleton Road
The railings in this area were restored and ‘missing’ sections were re-instated.
Creation of a Biddulph Heritage Map
We commissioned a heritage map of Biddulph, identifying important buildings and locations – as a basis for developing a heritage trail, available from Biddulph Town Hall Reception.
We’re working on a number of projects:
Repairs to the Old Railway Station at Gillow Heath, Biddulph Valley Way
The station was opened by the North Staffordshire railway in 1864. Originally named Gillow Heath, the station was renamed Biddulph in 1897. The station had a station box, station house, a small waiting room, toilet and platform. The station building is now in private ownership, but the platform on the opposite side still exists. Reclaimed blue bull-nosed bricks have been installed sympathetically, using traditional methods, to tie-in with the existing bricks to restore the platform edge. The following works are in progress:
clearance of an area for seating – two railway benches to be installed.
installation of interpretation boards and signage to provide information and celebrate the town’s rail history.
restoration of the footbridge.
Restoration of Troughs on Overton Road, Biddulph Park
The drinking troughs are Grade II listed, dating from the early 19th century. They provided water on a former Turnpike Road from Tunstall to Biddulph, Bosley and onto Macclesfield.
We’ve installed a replacement D-shaped trough, reinstated the right-hand finial and pyramidal capping and repointed the stonework.
Maintenance and Restoration of War Memorial
Biddulph Town Council maintains the towns War Memorial, ensuring it’s cleaned regularly.
The War Memorial is a key feature of our town centre and forms an important part of our cultural heritage as a reminder of the tragic impact of war.
