A message from the Mayor of Biddulph Cllr John Jones:
Today, Monday 8th March, is Commonwealth day and, as with so many events during these past twelve months, it will be celebrated rather differently this year because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation. However, it is still a day that will be marked by the fifty four Commonwealth countries that are home to two point four billion people.
In a year when, as individuals, we have had to remain at a distance, the theme for this year Day is “Delivering a Common Future”. It is a theme that highlights how the 54 member countries in the Commonwealth family are ‘innovating, connecting and transforming’ to help achieve some of its biggest goals, like protecting natural resources and boosting trade.
There can be few, if any, parts of the United Kingdom that are not home to people with Commonwealth connections and Biddulph is no exception. This year’s theme is one that we can strive for in our own community as we seek to create a better future after this dreadful virus has been suppressed. I know that Biddulph already has these deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill and that is something we can be proud of and know that it reflects the ideals of the Commonwealth.
For my part, I offer my best wishes to everyone on this special day and going forward. I’m sure that better times lie ahead and we can all look forward to having a great summer and, this year, a proper Christmas. Meantime, we need to keep to the rules for little longer and continue look out for the vulnerable.
Take care and stay safe.
